The intergalactic Texas cowboy who inspired David Bowie
Ziggy Stardust. One of David Bowie's most iconic creations was inspired by several artists. Vince Taylor, a singer he had seen a few times and who fell from grace due to drugs and a life long struggle with mental illness
Iggy Pop David's great friend and collaborator was another huge influence, he just added the Z for flavor. That is David over there on the right playing piano
Marc Bolan of T.Rex was another important influence in Bowie's creative process for Ziggy persona.
There is a Texas connection too, it was here that David discovered Ziggy's stardust.
Behold Lubbock's own Norman Carl Odam aka The Legendary Stardust Cowboy.
David talked about him in this interview. Fast forward to about 2:34. He found his music "atrocious AND wonderful in that special way"
The Legendary Stardust Cowboy is one of the early wild pioneers of psychobilly and a lifelong devotee to space exploration. His first notable song Paralyzed was recorded in Fort Worth and featured T-Bone Burnett on drums. He is featured ina book about outsider music called Songs In The Key Of Z. In a piece called Wide Open Space Cadet. It is a hilarious and charming read and you can read it here
His music was as eclectic as his signature look which included buckskin jacket, cowboy boots and spurs, and ten-gallon hat. He was featured on Dr. Demento, Laugh In and Hey Hey It's Saturday
David Bowie met The Legendary Stardust Cowboy and even recorded one of his songs. Here is the original version of I Took A Trip On A Gemini Spaceship
There is a photo of them together HERE on the Stardust Cowboys fb fan page Here is David Bowie's majestic cover of I Took A Trip On A Gemini Spaceship. From his album Heathen that came out in 2002 and this song features the lowest note he ever sang on any of his albums.
The Legendary Stardust Cowboy is still out there making his magic check out his cover of Space Oddity(below) and if you would like more of his music snag a copy of his anthology "For Sarah, Raquel, and David: An Anthology" that came out a few years ago.... The title is a reference to some famous fans Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, Raquel Welch, and Bowie and you can get it HERE
